is the yen strong or is it just the aussie and american dollars falling?
my guess is that japanese institutions have been borrowing heavily locally and investing overseas to take advantage of their low cost of debt (approximately 0.1% official interest rate). however, because the financial markets are suffering right now (and also because world interest rates have also fallen), many of these investors have decided to sell out from these foreign investments and reduce their level of leverage. hence, lots of funds are now flowing back into japan, creating demand for the yen.

East vs West finances perfectly summed up as follows:
With some $18.5 billion in cash, and relatively little debt, Toyota is still in far better shape to weather the downturn than General Motors and Chrysler, which on Friday received $17.4 billion in emergency loans from Washington.
You thought it applied only to individuals, but now it applies to companies as well!
Can one of you finance nerds pls explain to me the following: if Japan is an export dependent economy and (assuming most of their exports are for luxury/secondary/non-essential goods) demand for their goods is decreasing and Japanese companies are already starting to report losses for the past fiscal year, why is the yen still going strong?
