Awesomnia, a family friend came over and decided to have a look at my laptop to see what was wrong with the dvdrom.

I went to the dvd cupboard in the living room and discovered they made a nest of my dvds and hundreds of hours worth of video tapes. It was like a sea of black with mini white capsules (the eggs). My Star Wars and Lord trilogies now stink of formic acid and have dirty black streaks all over them. At least those were discs that could be cleaned.

Thankfully they had not reached the VCR and DVD player yet. Who knows what would happen. Perhaps you can understand why I hate ants so much and how I don't share your enthusiasm about "nature" taking all that time and care to produce these ants, James.

PS They are aggressive bastards who bite and took over the former more passive ant colony that existed around this neighbourhood. They are also capable of biting my penis when I am asleep.

Classic:

Speeding
-----------------------
A driver is pulled over by a police man.
Man: Is there a problem Officer?
Officer: Sir, you were speeding.
Man: Oh I see.
Officer: Can I see your licence please?
Man: I'd give it to you but I don't have one.
Officer: Don't have one?
Man: Lost it 4 times for drink driving.
Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please.
Man: I can't do that.
Officer: Why not?
Man: I stole this car.
Officer: Stole it?
Man: Yes, and I killed and raped the owner.
Officer: You what?
Man: She's in the boot if you want to see.

The Officer looks at the man and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer2: Sir, could you step out of your vehicle please! The man steps out of his vehicle.

Man: Is there a problem sir?
Officer2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.
Man: Murdered the owner?
Officer2: Yes, could you please open the boot of your car please.

The man opens the boot, revealing nothing but an empty boot.

Officer2: Is this your car sir?
Man: Yes, here are the registration papers.

The officer is quite stunned.

Officer2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving licence.

The man digs in his pocket revealing a wallet and hands it to the officer. The officer opens the wallet and examines the licence. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer2: Thank you sir, one of my officers told me you didn't have a licence, stole this car, raped and murdered the owner.

Man: Bet you the lying bastard told you I was speeding, too.

A message from Renee:

Does anyone have Edman's phone number?
Since it is Renee's birthday this saturday she needs to contact him to confirm that he can *drive*.

If you do, post it on the blog or call renee or marc or me.

That includes you if you read this, Ed.
:)

You can reduce the sound that way but it won't completely block it. I am not sure if you can James. Sound are compressional waves and if you think of it at the atomical scale, all that it takes for sound to "pass" any particular membrane is for the membrane to vibrate when hit by the sound. It's just that this particular membrane we are talking about is most likely air.

So what you are asking is whether there is a substance or method which will let air through one way but not the other.

The only plausible device that I can think of off the top of my head is to pressurize one room such that air moves in one direction but not the other. But surely pressurising a room will require some sort of electricity to be any effective?

EDIT: Come to think of it, what did scientists use to pressurize gas into liquids when electricity weren't available? Or to create a vacuum when there was no electricity? You can probably use the same principle there... though don't know how pressuring the medium will effect the sound's legibility.

have the wall shaped like a massive cone so it acts an amplifier on the one end, while trapping sound on the other end.

Question
Is it possible to contruct a non-electronic device which will physically separate two rooms such that sound can travel from Room A to Room B but not from B to A?

a google search for UNSWCG returned only 3 posts from this blog, from 2 years ago.. yes i was bored..

Hi People!

Just a final update...

The invite is still at: http://members.optusnet.com.au/tucoti/invite.html

Nothing has changed.

The menu should look like this:
2 chicken wings
1 veal cutlet
half steak
1 skewer
2 sausages
vegetable salad
pasta
drinks

If people can bring their games (board, card, ball or anything else eg. fishing rod) for entertainment then I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers!
Yi

My bunny unexpectedly gave birth today to 3 newborns so she can't make a grand entrance at Yi's thing. Instead I'll bring you the stud muffin who impregnated her.

Why Benny is so tolerated cool

i have found a new reason to buy the herald..

I'm sitting in a lab and the first thing I notice is a screen with cs_italy on it. I was thinking..."It's all over people" until I realise its only a wallpaper.

lol got it, didn't use two items though.

yay, it also took me a while, but i managed to finish it as well..

heres another test of logic

Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Charlie that's awesome, took me a bit to figure out what i was trying to do but great fun

Yi, do you have those 4 or so links for virus scanners etc that you said, when you run them all, your computer should be "safe"?

An Announcement from Admin ...

For this session's UNSWCG... All players require a pre-requisite of at least 10 victories in the server to participate..
Also, there will be 2 divisions... a 1v1 division and a 2v2 division...
Registration for both will commence from next week...
pleeaase msg me of which position u want

Test your logic

LOL, you were saying about passwords the other night, Darren?

If you need "graphical program" access *shivers*, then you can run "vncserver" on the cse computers and download vncviewer to connect to the server via that.

I just tried it and it works great.

Just make sure when you start "vncserver", set a pasword that you don't care about, because it's sent in clear text across the wire and also stored in clear text in your home directory so system admins can see it. ;)

Oh and the connect url is of the form:
wagner.cse.unsw.edu.au:1
where 1 is given to you when you start vncserver.

Forgot to say that you should use vnc because it's a much much more lightweight protocol than X, so your graphical programs will load up much faster and be more responsive.

i use cygwin and the cygwin Xserver, then ssh to cse comps

that way i can use graphical programs, but its kinda slow for the more elaborate ones (like eric or eclipse)

i used to use putty, and still do if my cable has been capped

Yeah thats what I'm using now, just interested in what other ppl use

PuTTY?

export TERM=xtermc
vim
(in vim)
:syntax on

Or you can just install vim at home. :)

Tuesday Cheap tickets ends at 5pm

cheap tix sounds good except Tuesday 7pm cheap tickets the week star wars is released on George St Cinemas?

Yeah could be just a tad crowded...
Which means lots of queues.
:)

I don't mind but just something to keep in mind

I would like to watch star wars this tuesday at george st cinemas.. being the cheap ticket day that it is.. a 7:00pm session or thereabouts?

Wednesday, May 18, 2005

Anyone care to watch Star Wars Ep 3 sometime?
Let me know

No worries Yi, sorry to hear about your accident.
But what better way than to forget about it by going climbing.
:)
You can drop your car off, i can pick you up...it's all good :D

If anyone is interested I'm planning on going climbing (time provided) on Mondays too at St Peters.
$9 for the whole day for UNSWOC members.
They have up to 19m walls (in comparison to the 8m walls at the Ledge) and it should be good fun if you're up for it.

Oh Jono, I won't be able to make rock climbing this Friday since I'll be taking the car in for repairs at night.

Yes, I had an accident with .. a pole at a petrol station.

Go to the Gold Coast for the price of a Travelpass (purple)

when giving street directions, don't say "oh follow me. I live just around the corner to where you want to go."
especially to old Asian ladies who's "danger-sense" might go ballistic right about now.

just tell them, straight down this road, through the park and when you come across the perpendicular road, that'll be Livingstone Rd.

ok It's a meet at 7pm at Newtown station on this saturday the 21st

spain sux...
and hence he wanted me to post up some details for his birthday this saturday...

but he's changed the venue....
so I'll wait for his confirmation before voting...
btw marc or James add spain , for his email ask me on icq

I'm in too

meditation over a thesis idea sounds good

you didn't answer my climbing question! :(

i'm so buggered.

count me in.

Sunday, May 15, 2005

Hi Lads and Lasses,

You have been cordially invited to join me for my 21st birthday barbecue.

The BBQ will be held at Clarkes Point Reserve, Woolwich on the 28th of May at 11am.

Please RSVP by the 25th of May and inform me of any special needs such as vegetarians, vegans or religious requirements!

The park is right by the sea and may be a little chilly so please bring a spare jacket.

There is a nice view of the city, plenty of coast for the fishing inclined and a decent patch of grass for any ball games. Please bring whatever entertainment you want!

Transport to the park is easiest by car and you can find the location here

If you wish to use public transport, some remote possibilities

Hope to see you there!

Yi

Woolwich is great.
I just went there to take a look. It's got 2 BBQ areas, with a total of at least 5 wood fire BBQs.
There's a decent area where we can play soccer though it's got a small incline.
Transport to Woolwich is best by car and there are lots of parking (~30 or more) plus it's close to other streets with parking.
Only negative is that it might be a little windy.

Any objections??

No? Great. Woolwich it is. :D

Bicentennial sounds good, except that theres no 'flat' ground to play any ball games on. Thats if anyone is going to play games of that sort.. If we wont, then its a good place to go to.

Woolwich looks like fun to get to, and I actually prefer going somewhere where I havent been before, but thats just me.

Edit: I just had a closer look at that Charles Pt Reserve, lets go to 'Proposed Park' instead!

I like the sounds of Centenniel Park or BiCentenniel Park.

Go with it!

Seems you have your next few sessions planned out.
Well I guess a joint thesis on an aerospace project with a software component would do us good. Though we'll need to sit on it and mediate for awhile.. :)

The Real Inspector Hound!!!
That was a good play. I remember we had that as a 3U English text for "Crime Fiction". Kind of weird with the Inspector .. I won't ruin it for the people who haven't seen/read it yet. :)

LOL. "dearly missed".. how so?

Hmm I have scoured through the street directory looking for parks with BBQs and hopefully good views, beaches and some grass. All of the good ones seem to have been visited by us already.

Anyone being to Wollwich? There are two parks there with one having two BBQs.. (from looking at the street directory).
You can check it out here.

Did we all have fun at Palm Beach?? The Basin had a few BBQs and the boat was good. :)

Or better yet, PROVIDE ME A SUGGESTION!!
Looking to send invites today!

Yi: Mechanical! Blasphemy!
no, mech are cool. ^^
man, did I just sound like benny? Benny? Is that you??

"run with it"
Good to hear it. :)
Reason I ask is I may very possibly delay my degree by another semester now so I'll graduate Dec 2006, not June as originally planned.
(Long story short - next semester I was to take 30 UoC with 3 hours of clashes, and a thesis.
Apparently that's pretty insane say some otherwise intelligent people and I don't disagree.
However, I'm kind of mad. But the advantages of delaying by a semester could outweigh the saved 6 months)

Which means I would start my thesis next year, not this August as planned.
I've spoken to professors before about team theses and it should be okay, but i'll try dig around some more.
More importantly it has to interest us both, which i think is harder on your side than mine, since aero topics easily involve computers but not necessarily vice versa.
Often a team thesis (I think) involves designing and then building something. (Which to me, albeit a crapload more work, is exciting.)

The good thing is, I'll be on roughly 18 UoC each semester from now on, with S1 2006 on like, 12-15 UoC.
Gives me a lot more time to work on a bigger thesis for the year, and I might throw in a post grad course or two if they let me.

Also probably keep working on my jobs and do CSE revue next session and all that.
Actually have what's otherwise known as a good time at uni.

-----------
Just came home more or less for the first time in over 3 days.
Sweet.

-----------
Watched the New College play tonight, "The Real Inspector Hound" (Tom Stoppard).
Best play I've ever seen. Could not believe the cast were all New College students.
(fyi new college is a dorm on unsw campus)

-----------
oh Yi you wanna come climbing Friday? :D
You were dearly missed last Friday. >_<

All those options sound good for BBQ though reckon we can do better than centennial park for a 21st.
But I do say, it's all good.

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Maybe I can get you free parking at Jones Bay Wharf? ^~

People, I just came back from Pyrmont Pt Park.
The view is good, there are 2 BBQs and there is a patch of grass that we can play sport on.
However parking is charged at $3.3/hr.

How about Centenniel Park? There are 5 seperate BBQs (maybe 2 stoves each?) and it's got bike/skates/horse hire so plenty of stuff to do. There's also lots of grass and even water. :)

Any objections?

Or maybe Bicentenniel Park? That's also one of our favourites. :)
Open to suggestions!

I randomly clicked the polygon construction ones. They make my brain hurt.

Final result 132. I think I guessed one of the spatial questions right, I am not sure

Darren -- toil against sloth. Don't give up. Come on 141 IQ!

: "Awesome, if you hilight text then press Post New Message, it quotes it!! Now you don't even need Ctrl C/V"

i dont need to press Ctrl C/V, i have autocopy for firefox...

i think for star it would be best if we start at least before midnight

: "
James!! Hmm...

LOL @ butters. Knew you'd like it. :)
"

Awesome, if you hilight text then press Post New Message, it quotes it!! Now you don't even need Ctrl C/V

Yes I have been wanting to start earlier and finish earlier. But apparently no one else does or listens.

Edit: Uh the quote system doesn't look that good. Why does edit post have a Turing test on it now?

James!! Hmm...

LOL @ butters. Knew you'd like it. :)

I thought KJ had a policy to turn off the server at 2-3am??
.. I guess that's late enough.
You know what? You should start early then stop early! That way, I might even get a game in. ><

Your friday isnt going well?

Mine just started... ugh too many late night starrings... I am so sick of waking up this late. I had a reason to go to uni for a lecture, but i wake up just as its finishing.. great.

Goddamn yi....

I'm never listening to any of ur download suggestions anymore...

Pure pwnage and now this. Clearly sun isn't working you hard enough

Yi:
That's a negative for the singleton set. The bridge exists.

I neither can, nor want to, nor feel like I have the right to burn anything.

This Friday is not starting well.

Oh how I miss Uni...

Jono, I haven't thought about thesis yet. Even though doing a combined thesis with a mechanical engineer might look bad, I'll take up your offer and run with it. :P

A song for the mathematically inclined..
http://members.optusnet.com.au/tucoti/finite.wmv

Glad you fellas are enjoying doing an IQ test.
1am and still at uni and crashing here. Great stuff. :)

Yi - plans sound great.

Also wanted to briefly chat to you about your thesis topic ideas for next year when you come back, and any possibility of doing a team thesis. Computer people are always useful. :)

Night!

Thursday, May 12, 2005

ok.
just completed that IQ test.
134.

Wonderfulness..

20/6: 3331 arvo
21/6: 3141 morning
27/6: 3311 morning
28/6: 3311 prac (morning?)
30/6: 3231 morning

just in time for the end of the finiancial year..

eheh I guess I'm an idiot compared to you brains..
i only got 125..

(but then again all those shape questions i just randomly clicked an answer ^^)

oh great, we can play soccer too

People, I haven't finalised the plans yet for the 28th... evident from the fact that I haven't sent out invites yet. :)
So there's no rush to RSVP yet. Though it'll be around 2 weeks to RSVP once I do finalise the plans.

I am taking suggestions for where to hold the BBQ. At the moment, Pyrmont Point Park is the leading bid.

Actually had a look at getting a jumping castle brought in. But a jumping castle big enough for adults have laws and regulations concerning their hiring... and to be honest the initial $200-$300 I had planned for it doesn't cover it.. o.O

The apartment will also need revising (read: cancelled) because I'll be having a seperate day on the 29th with my parents and sister which means I can't stay out overnight as I initially thought.

bah!!

Anyway what you will get in exchange for relinguishing the jumping castle and the apartment is a gourmet BBQ fully catered for by your humble servant, me, with tongs in one hand and beer in the other. :D

Once details crystalize, (and people send me their favouriate BBQ parks for consideration!) I'll send everyone an invite.

Cheers!

yeah check this one..
Exam week 1 Mon Thu
Exam week 2 Tue Fri
Exam week 3 Mon

Yes that final monday is all the way out there at July 4th.
But yes good spread.
:)

P.S. for those who don't know, exam timetables are out.

This means I should be rock climbing at Nowra for 3-4 days on the weekend kicking off stuvac. :)
Anyone interested?

Yeah that test seems over-laden with spatial reasoning. Perhaps they think that is representative of 'ultimate' IQ. This makes sense because due to the testing nature (online), they cannot include tests such as digit span, and any verbal/numerical reasoning tests can be easily 'googled'.

However, for any IQ value to be informative, psychometric properties must be present.

We need to know the normative sample from which our score is compared against. Is it top 5% academic performers in US? If so, how many of those top 5% is sampled? Also reliability and validity data must be included. In reference to reliability, it is known that any test that is freely available compromises its reliability as they suffer from learning and familiarity effects, among others. In fact we know that there is something called the 'flynn effect' whereby each progressive decade, people are scoring higher on IQ tests across a large number of countries sampled. Are we getting smarter or is IQ tests more freely available? In reference to validity, we need to know the psychological construct this test is getting at and how well it achieves that. Is it tackling general intelligence or specific intelligence, if 'ultimate' test is tackling specific intelligence then how do we know that spatial reasoning is indicative of superior intelligence? furthermore, people have argued that academic intellegence (which IQ measures) is less predictive of life success than say EQ (emotional intelligence).

Monday, May 09, 2005

homestarrunner.com was a feature on newsradio tonight. I didn't get to listen to it though, I just overhead them interviewing the creator.

i did that test, and the spatial ones were really hard to figure out.. but they were colourful..

i got 141 for it..

Had a quick look.. some of the spatial tests are like.. o.O

The best and toughest IQ test I have ever done

Score = 139 (Ultimate IQ test)

And besides, given the choice again, I'm sure Char would still want to have played star. :D

lol Yi don't feel bad, if that's what you're feeling. It's a life choice. One must bear all consequences of such choice.

i must take some responsibility for introducing Charlie to Starcraft... handed over to him along with Broodwar at the lights outside the bar near NSB...

lol, july 2000, the beginning of both my demise in the hsc and a lifelong obsession with star.

I've got a replay that will sure stir up some reminiscence in you. An epic battle between the unperturbed blue terran race and the pestilent brown zerg swarm that'll keep you glued to your computer screen through to finality.

Alien mode [type of relationship]
When two persons are aware of each other's existence, have seen each other before but have not talked to each other. They'd walk by each other in a corridor without saying 'hi' while patently aware that this person has been around.

Subcatagories

  • Friendly alien mode - When the two persons in fact like each other for whatever reason. They'd like to say 'hi' next time but the rules of engagement in alien mode prevents such progress.

  • Hostile alien mode - When the two persons in fact hate or dispise each other. They'd love to beat the other person at some task to demonstrate their superiority.

Further, did they see this on the name list? I think this is hilarious. It's bloomin awesome:

Linda Yuen (soz, don’t know your last name either!)

That is grand

I don't know why it doesn't work on IE, it just doesn't. Also IE doesn't wrap the text around. Is there any person on this blog who still uses it?

If so please tell me so I can say: too bad. I dunno, I'll fix it next time I feel like it. If you want to revert back to the old bulletin, just delete the anchor link and comment out the iframe tag and uncomment the textarea tag.
